NINS, Retratos de niños del Museo Sa Bassa Blanca
Complete catalog of the NINS collection, with 244 color pages, 80 full-page reproductions and double-page genealogical trees. Spanish version.
The portraits, which form the core of the ''Nins'' collection are from different countries and different epochs and although, for the most part, they represent the sons and daughters of important historical figures, there also images of children of more modest origins. All have been selected according to the same criteria: the biography prevailing over the anecdote, where the artist's driving impulse is to capture the identity of the sitter, whatever his particular talent, expertise or period. Gradually, over the decades, this collection as well as being a discourse on childhod, underwent a gradual expansion, and began to focus more specifically on the 16th and 17th centuries, it now also gives a representation of the different court portraiture tendencies in Europe over the centuries. This selection enables us to follow the evolution of a certain way depicting children, as well as reflecting metamorphosis of clothing. There is a slow evolution from an elegant austerity towards a frivolous exuberance. As from the 19th century, we can perceive a greater degree of expressiveness in the painting, a loosening-up which reflects the onset of a warmer more tender approach to infancy as a separate and vulnerable state.
This catalog brings together all the works from the collection, with an explanation and a full-color image, along with a preface by Yannick Vu and Elena María Santiago Páez, and the family trees of the Stuarts, the Tudors, the Savoy, the Habsburgs, the Medici, and the Bourbons.
